GUJARAT. In India, the state of Gujarat has a 70% share in the country’s production of peanuts and cotton. Official figures show that monsoon planting is well ahead of last year not only for these two commodities but also for sesame seeds and castor.

Peanuts and cotton account for 87%

Present agricultural account figures issued by the government in Gujarat show that Kharif planting has been completed on 3.391 million ha as of 30 June. This is 39% ahead of the end of June last year. Peanuts and cotton currently account for a stunning 87% of the area planted.

Although peanut planting has surged by 71% on the figure presented one year ago, it should be noted that planting is still underway. Last year the total area planted with peanuts reached 1.9 million ha. This figure will probably be reached in the coming week or so.

Cotton planting has risen by a more moderate 10% as compared with last year. Yet, commodity analysts point out that cotton plantings will decline on last year in the figures that will be released in the coming weeks. Issue is that farmers are showing less interest this year, so it remains to be seen how much they will plant.

Sesame plantings have also risen by an impressive 24% and the area planted with castor has reached 1,621 ha.
