OTTAWA. Production has declined sharply in Canada. Fortunately, carry-in supplies will provide a cushion. Internationally, the situation is quite different for red and green lentils.

Carry-in supply cushion

At the end of the harvest season, deficiencies such as discolouration and germination are becoming apparent, especially in the fields harvested later. As Rayglen Commodities report quality differs much more than in recent years. High-quality lentils are mainly trading in a stable range and red lentils at CAD 0.260-0.265/lb.

According to the latest report issued by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada production has fallen by 27%, acreage by 11% and average yields by 18% as compared with last year. Saskatchewan accounts for around 83% of production and Alberta for the remaining 17%. Total supplies will, however, only range 4% lower as carry-in supplies and imports will be much higher than last season.

Red lentils in abundance?

According to Chelmer Foods, Canada and Australia as the world's largest red lentil producers are expected to produce more than 4 million mt together. Although this increased supply may put pressure on prices, the rising demand in South Asia, especially India, will bring some support.

Demand for green lentils is also on the rise in India as local processors have to compensate for the lower production volumes for other products. A supply squeeze is possible for this variety as production also ranges lower in other countries such as the USA, Russia and Kazakhstan. Prices should firm.
