CANBERRA. The Australian Macadamia Society has again lowered the production estimates for 2017.

Cyclone Debbie takes the blame as the plantations in Queensland and New South Wales were flooded in March. In addition, heavy rains interrupted the harvest in June.

Output set to decrease by 9.5%

The Australian Macadamia Society is currently expecting an output of 44,000 mt. Hitherto production was expected to rise for a third year in a row. Now, however, year-on-year production is set to decrease by 9.5%.

The International Dried Fruits and Nuts Council reckons with a global production of 188,862 mt, which is a 5.6% increase to 2016/17. Output is expected to grow in South Africa, Kenya and China amongst other countries.
