OTTAWA. In the current July Report, Agriculture and Agri-Foods Canada reports a drastic correction of the mustard seed acreage.

Production drops to 90,000 metric tonnes

Canada is one of the most important growing countries in the international mustard seed market. In 2019, the EU imported a total of 37,600 metric tonnes of mustard seeds from Canada, about one third of the total imports in that year. Now it has been reported that cultivation in 2020/2021 has declined by 35% to 104,000 ha compared to last year. The production estimate of 90,000 metric tonnes is a good half of the 2018/2019 crop, but experts are confident and expect prices to reach CAD 680-710 per metric tonnes EXW for the coming season.
