Mustard seeds: Acreage remains stable, yields lag behind

OTTAWA/KIEV. Farmers in Canada have increased production of yellow and brown mustard seeds this season. The crop volume was impressive, but still has potential.

 

Yield potential not yet exhausted

According to StatsCan's latest annual report, the 2018 crop comprised 173,000 mt, almost 42% more than last year around this time. Despite the 30% increase in acreage the 10% higher yields, however, production will by no means match 2016. The yield of 1.21 mt/ha enabled the farmers to produce an impressive 236,000 mt of mustard seeds in 2016/17.

BRUSSELS. Although EU importers spent less on spices in 2025 than in the record year of 2024, the import value is still quite high as official statistics show. Record amounts were, in fact, spent on cardamom, fenugreek and spice mixtures, saffron and turmeric. Pepper tops the chart. While the year-to-year import value has risen for cinnamon, cloves and mace, the opposite is the case for capsicum, ginger and vanilla, cumin, nutmeg and coriander and curry.
