MOSCOW. As the data issued by the Russian Statistics Service (Rosstat) indicates Russia may have become the leading producer in 2018.

Production has doubled

Russia has frequently ranked third, after Nepal and Canada, as producer in the past. At around 200,000 mt, however, the country stands a good chance of leading the rankings this season.

According to the Russian statistics service, a total of 338,000 ha were sown in 2018, an increase of 2.2 times over 2017. The APK Inform estimates are, however, less optimistic at 290,000 ha. With yields ranging at 0.69-0.70 mt/ha, however, production should still reach around 200,000 mt - more than twice as much as in 2017 (approx. 98,000 mt).

BRUSSELS. Although EU importers spent less on spices in 2025 than in the record year of 2024, the import value is still quite high as official statistics show. Record amounts were, in fact, spent on cardamom, fenugreek and spice mixtures, saffron and turmeric. Pepper tops the chart. While the year-to-year import value has risen for cinnamon, cloves and mace, the opposite is the case for capsicum, ginger and vanilla, cumin, nutmeg and coriander and curry.
