OTTAWA. Canada expects an increase in export volumes this season despite still high prices. The current import figures to Germany seem to prove this trend.

Crop volume expected to triple

There were interesting price movements in the Canadian mustard seed market last week. Buyers who were still short of product raised their bid prices, while others who had recently been able to stock up sufficiently lowered their bids. And then this week, despite the imminent turn of the year, bid prices have risen once again, with buyers looking to stock up for delivery dates in January and February, according to experts at Rayglen Commodities.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada recently adjusted its seasonal forecast in its November report. Thanks to average yields and a doubling of acreage to 214,000 ha, Canadian mustard seed production is expected to reach 177,000 mt this year, almost three times as much as in 2021 and about 77% more than in 2020. In addition, analysts expect exports to increase by 4% to 110,000 mt this season. A price level like before last year's disastrous crop is nevertheless currently inconceivable, but at least prices are expected to be 20% lower on average than in 2021/2022 at CAD 2,300/mt.

In the European spot market, prices for mustard seeds have declined. White mustard seeds, 99.9% purity, are currently being offered for EUR 1,560/mt FCA Poland, for yellow mustard seeds of the same purity traders are asking EUR 1,170/mt FCA.

Germany imports more from neighbouring countries

Germany's mustard seed imports from Russia have halved in the first two months of this season, contributing to a 30% year-on-year decline in total imports. Between September and October 2022, Germany imported a total of 8,030 mt of mustard seeds, compared to 11,670 mt in the same period last year. The main declines were in shipments from Russia (-51% to 3,871 mt), Ukraine (-26% to 1,123 mt) and Kazakhstan (-16% to 218 mt), while imports from Canada (42% to 1,629 mt), the Czech Republic (+406% to 647 mt) and Poland (+222% to 209 mt) increased significantly year-on-year.
