NUR-SULTAN/OTTAWA. Although Canadian mustard seed production has declined in the 2019/20 season, export shipments to the EU have increased significantly in the past year.

Imports rise to 120,000 metric tonnes

According to current data from the European Commission, EU countries imported a total of 119,300 metric tonnes of mustard seeds* from third countries in 2019, which is about 30% more than in the previous year. Although Canada's mustard seed production of 135,000 metric tonnes last year was significantly lower than in 2018 (approximately 174,000 metric tonnes), Canada has been able to establish itself as the most important export partner for the EU. Compared to 2018, shipments increased by almost 25% to 37,606 metric tonnes. Russia therefore slipped into second place with a stable 32,000 metric tonnes. Imports from the Ukraine, Kazakhstan, the USA and Moldova were also significantly higher than in 2018.

Kazakhstan wants to reduce cultivation

The current estimates of the Canadian Ministry of Agriculture for the 2020/2021 season predict a 7.4% increase in mustard seed production to 145,000 metric tonnes. Meanwhile, Ukrainian farmers did their best to implement the 56,000 ha cultivation plan, which would be a similar acreage as last year. According to Kazakh media reports, the area under cultivation is expected to decline significantly this year. The farmgate prices for Kazakh mustard seeds have dropped noticeably in the past weeks. Price indications for mustard seeds, Brassica Nigra, with a 98% purity have declined by around EUR 0.04 per kg since the beginning of the year and are currently quoted at EUR 0.322 per kg EXW. Mustard seeds, Sinapis Alba, with a 97% purity are also traded more favourably at EUR 0.299 per kg EXW.
