OTTAWA/BRUSSELS. Higher yields and an increase in acreage are set to lead to a significant rise in the availability of mustard seeds on the Canadian market during the 2026/2027 season. Prices are expected to fall. EU countries have increased their imports of mustard seeds from Canada by a good 5% since the beginning of July.

Exports are expected to remain at a high level

The Canadian mustard seed market is set for a good season. As confirmed by the latest data from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, the harvested acreage has risen by 3% year-on-year to 149,000 mt. The average yield per hectare, at 1.06 mt, was also significantly higher than the already good result of the previous year, meaning that production rose by 13% year-on-year to 158,000 mt.

Added to this are estimated imports of 8,000 mt (+9% year-on-year) and carry-over stocks from last year of 48,000 mt, meaning that a total of 314,000 mt of mustard seeds (+9% year-on-year) should be available on the Canadian market for the 2026/2027 season.

Exports are expected to reach 100,000 mt, as in 2025/2026, whilst domestic demand is estimated at 44.00 mt. EU countries have increased their imports from Canada in recent weeks, and smaller crops in Kazakhstan, as well as less attractive imports from Russia, could further boost these buyers’ interest in Canadian flaxseed. The US and the EU are traditionally the most important markets for Canadian mustard seed supplies.

This could be helped by the fact that Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada expects the average price for Canadian mustard seeds to fall by 6% to CAD 815/mt in the 2026/2027 season. According to Rayglen Commodities, prices have remained relatively stable recently, with yellow mustard seeds trading at CAD 0.35-0.40/lb FOB farm, whilst prices for brown mustard seeds stand at CAD 0.35-0.37/lb.

Canada remains the EU’s top supplier

Mustard seed imports into the EU were significantly below last year’s level in the first fourteen weeks of the new season. According to data from the European Commission, a total of 15,366 mt of mustard seeds was imported from third countries between 1 July 2026 and 4 October 2026, which is just over 50% less than at this time last year. The import value during the aforementioned period amounted to EUR 11.028 million (-40%) whilst the average import price rose by 31% compared with the same period last year to EUR 0.72/kg.

One reason for this extreme difference is the 6,695 mt of shipments from Brazil, which were recorded in the first few weeks of the previous season but are entirely absent this year. However, shipments from most other countries were also down. Imports from Kazakhstan fell by 35% year-on-year to 3,498 mt, as did shipments from Ukraine (-59% to 2,083 mt), Russia (-82% to 1,400 mt) and Moldova (-35% to 267 mt). Only imports from the main supplier, Canada, rose by 5% to 7,949 mt.

Although Poland and Belgium remain among the most important buyers this season, imports into both countries fell sharply by 64% to 3,620 mt and by 75% to 3,390 mt respectively. Germany (-49% to 2,930 mt) and the Czech Republic (-36% to 1,080 mt) have also significantly reduced their imports. In contrast, the Netherlands increased its imports from 173 mt to 3,200 mt compared with the same period last year.
