Mustard seeds: no production dent anticipated

Production similar to last year
According to official reports, the area sown with mustard seeds in Canada has fallen short of initial expectations, reason being unfavourable weather conditions and the resulting delays. Judging by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's latest estimates the average yield of 0.94 mt/ha may, however, only range 3% lower than last year's 0.97 mt/ha. In addition, the area sown still ranges 5% higher than last year at 153,000 ha and production is estimated at 140,000 mt, roughly on a par with last year’s figure. Yet, it should be noted that this is lower than in previous years. Saskatchewan accounts for 71% of the area sown, Alberta for 28% and Manitoba for the remainder.
As Rayglen Commodities state the price gap between the current and new crop is closing. While brown mustard seeds have been trading in a firm range of CAD 0.35/lb for some time now, yellow mustard seeds are trading lower at CAD 0.37/lb. For full-year contracts buyers must be prepared for pay premiums for deliveries after December 2026.
