OTTAWA/FRANKFURT. Imports of mustard seeds from third party countries into the EU have increased by nearly 25% since 2016. According to the data provided by the European Commission, Uruguay played a special role in 2018.

Plus 80% within two years

In 2016, the EU countries imported a total of 79,600 mt from third party countries. In 2017 imports ranged at 85,000 mt and in 2018 imports approached 100,000 mt. While shipments from countries such as Canada, the Ukraine and Kazakhstan and Moldova to the EU declined sharply in 2018, shipments from Russia increased. Most striking, however, is the volume of imports from Uruguay, which, according to the European Commission, was of little relevance to the EU in the past.

BRUSSELS. Although EU importers spent less on spices in 2025 than in the record year of 2024, the import value is still quite high as official statistics show. Record amounts were, in fact, spent on cardamom, fenugreek and spice mixtures, saffron and turmeric. Pepper tops the chart. While the year-to-year import value has risen for cinnamon, cloves and mace, the opposite is the case for capsicum, ginger and vanilla, cumin, nutmeg and coriander and curry.
