OTTAWA. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada anticipates further sharp price cuts for mustard seeds in 2023/2024. Production will only rise a bit. Germany still strongly relies on Russia for supplies.

Sowing set to decline

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada estimates that the area sown has more than doubled from 117,000 ha to 225,000 ha in 2022/2023 as compared with last season. As yields have also recovered production rose by as much as 166% to 162,000 mt. Total supplies reached 177,000 mt in 2022/2023 and the average price is set at CAD 2,525/mt.

Although sowing is expected to decline by 10% this year, yields should rise by 19% to 0.88 mt/ha. Production will, consequently, rise by 5% to 170,000 mt in 2023/2024. The carry-in stocks should drive total supplies up to 227,000 mt, which will weigh on the market and cause average prices to decline by 26% to CAD 1,870/mt.
