OTTAWA. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada anticipates a production slump for mustard seeds in 2025/2026. Sinapis Alba seeds are trading a bit higher in Europe.

Low prices deter farmers

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada estimates this year's production at 105,000 mt, which marks a 45% slump on last year. Main reason is the decline in the area sown. Issue is that low prices have prompted farmers to switch to other crops. The area sown, in fact, only comprises 146,000 ha, with the province of Saskatchewan accounting for 65%, Alberta for 34% and Manitoba for the remainder.

Yet, the declines in production and in sowing should prompt prices to range higher than in 2024/2025. Yellow mustard seeds are currently trading in a range of CAD 0.46-0.48/lb FOB farm and brown mustard seeds at CAD 0.42-0.44/lb according to Rayglen Commodities. In Eastern Europe, the prices for Sinapis Alba seeds, 99.95% have risen a bit to EUR 750-800/mt (USD 875-933) DDP Germany.
