OTTAWA. Despite yields being low Canada's mustard seed production has risen this year. Demand is, however, leaving much to be desired. Germany has also reduced imports sharply.

Production 4% up

Trading is still rather subdued in Canada and export demand has remained low, whereas longterm contracts predominate market activities in the country according to Rayglen Commodities. The EU and the USA should remain the most important export destinations this year.

Projections are unchanged for 2023/2024 with the noted exception of domestic consumption, which Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada has revised a bit downwards. Predictions may, however, change in the next few months. As the area harvested is up on last year, production has risen despite yields declining by 8% to 0.68 mt/ha. With production climbing to 168,000 mt and carry-in supplies ranging at 40,000 mt total supplies will reach 214,000 mt this season, which is 13% up on last year. Although prices will fluctuate, the average will be lower than last year.
