OTTAWA. Statistics Canada has reduced its crop forecast for the 2026/27 sowing season by 23%. Rainfall is contributing to positive crop development. EU countries have increased their imports by 4%.

Crop forecast significantly reduced

In Canada, mustard seed sowing has progressed significantly more slowly than usual this year. Unfavourable weather conditions towards the end of the sowing period also meant that the fields sown later could not be tilled to the extent planned, as reported by the experts at Rayglen Commodities.

In the regions where sowing took place earlier, the mustard plants are already beginning to flower, and occasional rain showers are supporting the currently positive overall development of the crop. However, there is still quite some time to go before the harvest, and, as usual, the weather remains a decisive factor.

In light of recent developments, Statistics Canada has revised its crop forecast for the 2026/27 season downwards in its latest report. The acreage had previously been estimated at 197,700 ha; the forecast now stands at just 152,800 ha. That would still represent a 5% increase on the 146,000 ha sown in 2025.

Prices for Canadian mustard seeds have shown little movement in recent weeks. Both spot prices and offers for shipments from the new crop stand at CAD 0.39-0.40/lb ex farm for yellow mustard seeds.
