Onions: difficult water situation in California

SACRAMENTO. A high risk of disease prevails for onion in California. Water allocations are also an issue.

High risk of disease and water issues

As Ofi reports harvesting started in the desert region of California in mid-May and has since moved northwards into the Central Valley. At the end of summer, the harvest will take place in the Pacific Northwest. Mild and dry late winter weather conditions in winter led to lower-than-expected yields at the start of the season. However, yields have since returned to near-target levels. At the same time, the risk of disease remains high, causing concern among growers.

Another consequence of the unusually warm and dry conditions in winter is that the snowpack melted earlier than usual. This is why rivers and reservoirs filled up sooner than forecast. Although most reservoirs are above their historical averages, the early release of meltwater may complicate distribution to growers. The Westlands Water District has announced a water allocation of 25% in 2026/2027.

Other cost factors

Global fertiliser markets have eased slightly, but prices remain volatile and above last year’s levels. Energy and fuel costs are also proving volatile. Onion supply is sufficient to meet demand across most grades and sizes. General costs are likely to follow the overall inflation rate. However, higher costs are expected for specialised products, including BI-controlled produce and colour-sensitive products. Added to this, are rising irradiation costs, which are forecast to increase by 8% next year.
