OTTAWA. Carry-in supplies will cushion the production decline for peas in Canada. Global supplies are rather limited.

Lush cushion from 2025/2026

Prices are firm in Canada and may differ depending on supplier and quality. There are still some attractive offers to be had according to Rayglen Commodities. Yellow peas are trading at CAD 9.00-9.25/bu ex-farm and green peas at CAD 10.00/bu. Demand will remain a decisive market factor in China and India, especially since India's Kharif production is expected to decline this year.

As the figures issued by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada show acreage and yields range lower than last year, which will prompt production to decline by 17%. Large carry-in supplies will, however, stabilise total supply.

Scarce supply

After rising in 2025, global production has fallen in 2026. According to Chelmer Foods, the combined production of Canada and Russia has declined by 1.2 million mt. Since shipments from Russia and Ukraine are affected by logistical restrictions in the Black Sea region, Canada is gaining in importance as a reliable exporter.

China imported a record 1.85 million mt of peas in the first eight months of 2026. The historical average is 1.18 million mt. Imports could remain at high levels until 2027, supporting yellow pea prices. India is also buying more. In the first four months of 2026/2027, the country imported around 525,000 mt – twice as much as in the same period last year. Rising domestic prices, uncertain crop predictions and unstable monsoon conditions are boosting demand.
