Pistachios: Germany's imports have increased massively

FRESNO/TEHRAN. This year's crop in the USA is unlikely to match last year's volume, but will still be good. Iranian prices continue to fall, while Germany has significantly increased its imports.

Estimated US crop of more than 1 billion lbs

The US crop in 2023/24 was 1.49 billion lbs, an increase of 69% on the previous season's 884 million lbs and, according to FreshPlaza, a new record crop. Taking all factors into account, the experts at ofi expect a total availability of 1.41 billion lbs for the 2024/25 season; this year's crop alone is estimated at just over 1 billion lbs. Although US shipments had decreased in May, looking at exports in 2024 to date, US shipments to important target countries such as China and various EU countries have increased significantly, rising by 3% compared to the same period last year. The fact that the crop is expected to be smaller than last year and the extreme heat in California could reduce the yield of high-quality pistachios should initially support prices.

Prices in Iran remain low

The situation is different on the Iranian pistachio market. The new season is in the starting blocks and prices, which have already reached new lows, have fallen further in recent weeks. Iranian in-shell pistachios, Ahmad Aghaei, 26/26 are currently trading at EUR 7.92/kg FOB Iran.

Germany's imports have risen significantly

Germany's pistachio imports climbed by a whopping 67.5% in the period from September 2023 to May 2024. A total of 36,921 mt of in-shell pistachios were imported into the country, compared to just 22,045 mt in the same period last year. The most important supplier by a huge margin is the USA, which delivered more than 35,000 mt to Germany; it was therefore able to increase its shipments by more than 73% compared to the previous year. This is followed by Iran, which also shipped an impressive 24% more pistachios to Germany than in the year before; all other countries are of little significance with shipments of a maximum of 71 mt. The declines from Belgium (-97.4%) and Greece (-92.6%) are striking.
