Pistachios: supercell storm spells bad news for supplies

GAZIANTEP. A supercell storm has rendered the recent INC production estimate for pistachios untenable in Turkey. Traders are not convinced that this year’s crop will be of much help in easing the current supply situation.

Supercell storm renders INC estimate untenable

At the end of April, frost occurred in Gaziantep Province and in the region of Urfa in southeastern Turkey. Fortunately, the impact was limited. Yet, a severe supercell storm followed on 3-4 May 2026, affecting the municipalities of Nizip, Oğuzeli, Karkamış and other parts of the Gaziantep Province as well as the municipality of Birecik in the neighbouring Şanlıurfa Province. The reported damage includes:

  • uprooted pistachio trees
  • broken branches
  • flower and fruit drop
  • loc
