Blue poppy seeds: Germany cuts imports by 20%

CHRUDIM. Trading is largely subdued in the Czech Republic. Poppy seed shipments to Germany have declined sharply.

Prices range EUR 1.60 per kg lower than in 2019

Blue poppy seeds are mainly trading stable in the Czech Republic with nominal downward corrections. Suppliers, however, state that all changes in price biol down to exchange rate fluctuations. Release orders for longterm contracts excepting, trading is largely subdued in the Czech Republic. Large volumes are not being sold at present. At EUR 2.76 per kg DDP Germany, the reference prices range as much as EUR 1.60 per kg below the record prices recorded one year ago. Prices, nevertheless, range EUR 0.50 per kg higher than in March 2018. New data has not been issued yet on sowing and market players refuse to speculate on production.

Shift in shipments to Germany

As little as 3,368 metric tonnes of poppy seeds were shipped to Germany between August 2019 and January 2020, which is a 21% decline over the same period in 2018/2019. While shipments from Austria and the Netherlands have risen notably, shipments from the Czech Republic have declined by 13% to 1,214 metric tonnes. Shipments from Turkey, Poland and France and Spain also fell by 50% or more.
