Saffron: adverse weather conditions to impact production

TEHRAN. New arrivals have prompted a sharp decline in saffron prices within Iran. This situation called for immediate action. Harvesting is still underway and adverse weather conditions are raising concern.

Wet and cold weather sparks concern

Farmers were caught out by the sharp decline in prices when arrivals started pouring in. Issue is that production costs have risen. By issuing an approved bid price the Ministry of Agriculture stepped in and balanced market prices, which mainly appeased farmers again. The spread of the coronavirus has slowed down exports and market players reckon that overseas shipments may surge as soon as the virus has been successfully contained. Issue is that import destinations will need more stocks to meet consumer demand.
