Sesame seeds: new restrictions prompt delivery delays

NEW DELHI. Although shipments from India to the EU have resumed, exporters are confronted with elaborate tests. Long delays are being reported. Trading remains largely subdued.

Tests for ETO and pesticide residues

India temporarily suspended sesame seed shipments to the EU in October after the ethylene oxide scandal prompted enormous challenges to exporters. Shipments from India to the EU only resumed last week after intense negotiations. The Indian Oilseeds and Produce Export Promotion Council (IOPEPC) and EU authorities agreed on a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) that comprises elaborate tests for ETO, salmonella and pesticide residues along with tougher regulations on quality.
