NUR-SULTAN/OTTAWA. Attractive prices are expected to boost sowing this year. Buyers in China and the EU continue to compete for Eastern European flaxseed. Trading has revived.

Production exceeds expectations in Canada

As Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada has recently reported the area harvested has exceeded expectations. The area sown in 2020 ranges at 337,000 ha, of which 371,000 ha were harvested. This is nearly 10% up on 2019. At 1.56 mt/ha yields may range below expectations, they are, however, 9% up on 2019. Demand is anticipated to drive up exports to 500,000 mt in 2020/2021, whereas exports only reached 350,000 mt in 2019/2020. This should also drive up prices, especiall since they remain high in Eastern Europe.
