CHRUDIM. After weeks of waiting, poppy seed farmers in the Czech Republic were finally able to start sowing for the new crop last week. Meanwhile, suppliers are making price adjustments in view of the coming season.

Inofficial estimates for 2021

Czech poppy seed farmers took advantage of the slightly warmer days last week to start sowing for this year's crop. Rainfall and cold temperatures had delayed the start of field work this year to the extreme. Official forecasts for the acreage are not yet available, but market players expect about 35,000-40,000 ha. With an average yield per hectare of 0.65-0.75 mt/ha, the crop would amount to 22,750-30,000 mt. It should become clear in a month's time how much acreage is actually to be expected.
