Saffron: slump in exports

TEHRAN. Iran’s saffron exports have declined sharply over the past 11 months in terms of value. In February, exports even lost more than 50% in value. Traders not only attribute this trend to exchange rate fluctuations.

Export value down 56%

Iran shipped 289,016 kg of saffron overseas worth USD 172.88 million between 20 March 2020 and 20 February 2021. The export value has thereby declined sharply by 33.5% on the same eleven-month period in 2019/2020 during which saffron worth USD 260.14 million was shipped overseas. This trend was intensified between 20 January and 18 February 2021 as exports declined nominally by 6.3% to 28,771 kg in terms of volume and sharply by 56.1% to USD 14.15 million in terms of value on the same period last year.
