Saffron: boost in export demand

TEHRAN. The prices for saffron have been slashed by more than 50% in recent years. Although producers in Iran are struggling with this development, the upside is that international demand has been boosted. Exports have, nevertheless, declined sharply in March/April.

Saffron exports rose by 30% to as much as 322,722 between 20 March 2020 and 20 March 21 as compared to the same period in 2019/2020. Although Iran shipped the spice to more than 60 destinations across the world, only five countries account for the lion's share of 79% of the total volumes shipped overseas in 2020/2021. As much as 257,314 kg were shipped to Hong Kong (23% of all volumes shipped), the United Arab Emirates (18.4%) and Spain (15%), followed by China (12.3%) and Afghanistan (10.4%).
