Pulses: pulses production can be reduced by 20 million tonnes

Fall in pulses area, production may be lower than last year

The beginning of the summer was very good and in view of the increase in the support price of pulses, it seemed that in the current season, the production of pulses will be produced. But according to the government's latest sowing data, in the current season, the government's move to make the country self-reliant in pulses is showing a shock. According to the government's latest sowing data, till September 15, the total sowing of pulses in the country is 14.038 million hectare. Which is 517,000 hectare less than last year. In the last year till now, the bills of pulses in the country had reached 14.555 million hectares. Arhar sowing has been affected in the current season in the country. In the current season, till September 15, sowing of Arhar has been recorded in 4.3 million hectares, whereas till last year, sowing of Arhar was reported in 5.239 million hectares across the country. In the last year, there has been a decrease of 1.792 milliion figure in sowing of Arhar.

At the same time, the area under urad has increased. Urad has been cultivated in 4.265 million hectares so far in the country whereas till now 3.513 million hectare was sown in urad.

It is noteworthy that in the current season, the Monsoon is weak and according to the information available, production of pulses per hectare in the current season will also be reduced. In 2016-17, the total production of pulses was recorded at 22 million tonnes. And at the beginning of the season it seemed that the production of pulses would be seen to increase and the country would be self-dependent in the pulses. There was also speculation that the government could consider export of pulses, but the production of pulses is currently lying backward.

Which can show the effect on pulses prices. Due to the recent price of pulses at the support price, the government decided to limit the import of some pulses. This led to an increase in the spot market value of pulses. But under the support price, the price of pulses changed the trend of farmers from pulses to other crops and jolted the country's self-reliance in the pulses of the government.

According to information gathered from spot market experts, due to the current data, pulses production can be reduced by 20 million tonnes and below. Once again, the country may have to meet the shortage of pulses by importing pulses.
