DALIAN. Although trade on the Chinese pumpkin seed market is slowly picking up again after the New Year celebrations, buyers are still cautious. Prices may vary depending on the supplier.

Situation in the main growing regions

After the Chinese New Year, actual transactions on the pumpkin seed market remain limited and the market is slow to pick up momentum. Most of the major growing regions have not yet fully resumed their activities, while the remaining stocks are mainly in the hands of traders. Most market players remain cautious.

Processing plants in Xinjiang have resumed work, while in Gansu the focus is on reducing stocks. Although there are some enquiries, there are relatively few actual transactions and, above all, stockists are only buying sporadically. In Inner Mongolia, local processing and smaller shipments are the main activities.

Market development and demand

In the export business, orders are mainly limited to demand-oriented processing. Overall, trading activity is subdued. Domestic demand is also recovering only slowly, inventory reduction is sluggish and new orders are lacking. Extensive stockpiling has not yet begun; further developments remain to be seen. Prices can currently vary significantly depending on the supplier: the latest indications for GWS kernels, grade A, were around USD 3.30/kg CFR EMP, while Shine Skins, grade A, were trading at around USD 2.44/kg CFR EMP. The acreage this year will play a decisive role in future price developments.
