Saffron: China is not the only problem

TEHRAN. Exporters in Iran now need a registration code to ship saffron to China. Although shipments to the United Sates require a similar code, only few suppliers in Iran have a code that is valid for China. These restrictions will certainly impact trading with China, Iran’s main customer for saffron. Traders, however, state that they are struggling with more serious barriers.

High losses for exporters

China officially informed the Trade Promotion Organization of Iran in December that all saffron exporters in Iran require a registration code. China has, in fact, recently implemented several new regulations for food safety reasons. All overseas food manufactures, processors and storage facilities, for instance, have to register with the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) since 01 January.
