Saffron: EU importers spend record amount

BRUSSELS/TEHRAN. EU saffron imports are on the rise with processors spending record amounts this year. Speculations on this year’s crop are not that encouraging in Iran. Quality control is making headlines.

EU spending 42% up

EU imports have climbed steadily in the past four years. At 89,850 kg they have surged to the third highest volume on record in the first eight months of the year. Higher volumes were only observed in the record year of 2021 when imports surged to 190,111 kg between January and August and in the same period of 2021 when imports stood at 90,996 kg. In terms of value, imports reached a record EUR 60.680 million (USD 714 million) between January and August 2025.
