Saffron: EU spends more

BRUSSELS/TEHRAN. Despite prices skyrocketing, Iran remained the leading supplier by far for saffron in the EU in 2024. Yet, the market has turned.

But buys less

Rising prices have impacted EU imports as official statistics show. They declined by 10% to 77,414 kg in 2024. In terms of value, however, they shot up by 28% to EUR 70.831 million (USD 73,625 million) as opposed to the EUR 55.473 million (USD 57.662 million) spent in 2023. Shipments from leading supplier Iran dropped by 17%. Yet, the country still holds a market share of 91%. Contrary to this, imports from Thailand recorded an astronomical surge.
