TEHRAN. In Iran, last year’s production ranged at 400 metric tonnes, of which 279 metric tonnes were exported and 30 metric tonnes were consumed. Now market players are concerned that it will be difficult to sell the remaining 90 metric tonnes.

Concerns over carry-over stocks

Problem is that Iran’s competitors are becoming more active in the international market. Global annual consumption ranges at 350 metric tonnes. Although Iran is the largest supplier by far, there are seven to eight other producing countries, which supply about 50 metric tonnes of saffron and the market players in Iran take these competitors very seriously. Especially this year with financial transactions, fundraising and transportation posing enormous challenges.

In April, Iran exported 12,320 kg of saffron worth USD 11.

BRUSSELS. Although EU importers spent less on spices in 2025 than in the record year of 2024, the import value is still quite high as official statistics show. Record amounts were, in fact, spent on cardamom, fenugreek and spice mixtures, saffron and turmeric. Pepper tops the chart. While the year-to-year import value has risen for cinnamon, cloves and mace, the opposite is the case for capsicum, ginger and vanilla, cumin, nutmeg and coriander and curry.
