Saffron: market prices nearly decline by 40%

TEHRAN. The market prices in Iran have declined by nearly 40% over the last ten months. Although harvesting normally starts in Mid-October, the market will have to wait another two weeks this year. Suppliers hope that the new crop will boost demand.

Subdued demand drives down prices

Although the prices in the domestic market have declined by nearly 40% over the last ten months, demand remains low. Trading activities are largely subdued and supplies currently outstrip demand. An additional problem is that the farmer require cash and have prompted a further surge in supplies. Exports have also dropped by 2% between the end of March and the end of May.
