Saffron: US sanctions have limited impact on exports from Iran

TEHRAN. Whereas as little as 122 mt of saffron were exported from Iran in 2012, production and export volume are growing continuously every year. Up to 10% of the production is smuggled illegally.

Production is on the rise in Iran

In Iran, acreage exceeds 115,000 hectares and about 500 hectares are added every year. Last year, production increased to  400 mt and average yields ranged at 3.7-4.0 kg per hectare. Normally 70% of production is exported every year, 20% is consumed in Iran and 10% is stored or even smuggled. The export destinations comprise 47 countries all over the world. Last year, Iran exported about 279 mt of saffron worth USD 351 million, the average export prices thereby ranges at USD 1,250 per kg. In 2017 the country exported about 237

TEHRAN. Price movements were mixed in Iran in September with barberries, dates, saffron and raisins showing the most drastic changes in the annual comparison. The market is closely following the price movements for pistachios and raisins. Almonds have taken quite a curious turn. Cumin is also showing some fluctuations.
