TEHRAN. While Iran’s total saffron exports reportedly declined by as much as 33% to 77 metric tonnes in April-August, prospects are much more encouraging in the Khorasan Razavi Province. The province produces high-quality saffron. Annual production here normally ranges above 400 metric tonnes.

Nominal rise in exports

As much as 117,5 metric tonnes of saffron were exported from the Khorasan Razavi Province in April-September, which is a 1% recovery over last year. As little as 115 metric tonnes were shipped overseas from the province last year as the exporters were restricted to the NIMA system, which rendered the export prices less attractive for buyers. This year acreage in Kohrasan Razavi has, however, increased by 3% to 90,000 hectares. Europe and the Persian Gulf are the two most important export destinations for the province.

BRUSSELS. Although EU importers spent less on spices in 2025 than in the record year of 2024, the import value is still quite high as official statistics show. Record amounts were, in fact, spent on cardamom, fenugreek and spice mixtures, saffron and turmeric. Pepper tops the chart. While the year-to-year import value has risen for cinnamon, cloves and mace, the opposite is the case for capsicum, ginger and vanilla, cumin, nutmeg and coriander and curry.
