Saffron: toxic combination

TEHRAN. Drought and climate stress have hit this year’s saffron production in Iran. Prices have surged in recent weeks. As recent export figures show, saffron is mainly exported in bulk, which generates less turnover for suppliers. The current market situation is toxic for local suppliers and overseas buyers alike.

China is main export destination

As official customs statistics show Iran has exported around 121 mt of saffron worth USD 60.174 million to 60 countries between April and October. Bulk exports account for nearly 63% of the volumes exported as 75,543 kg worth USD 37.358 million were shipped overseas in packages of more than 30 g. Suppliers also shipped 30,022 kg worth USD 15.331 million in packages under 10 g and 14,897 kg worth USD 7.051 million in packages of 10 g to 30 g.
