Saffron: upbeat projections for new crop

TEHRAN. Prospects are highly encouraging for the new saffron crop. Iran, however, needs to rethink its policies to reclaim its top position in the international market.

Yields to triple

With harvesting about to start optimism prevails in Iran. As local media reports state weather conditions have been much more favourable for this year’s crop. Expectation is that production will climb to 350-400 mt this year. Contrary to this, drought prompted last year’s output to drop to 300-350 mt. According to the Ministry of Agriculture cultivation currently continues to span 127 ha, mainly in the northeastern provinces of Khorasan Razavi, North and South Khorasan. BRUSSELS. Although EU importers spent less on spices in 2025 than in the record year of 2024, the import value is still quite high as official statistics show. Record amounts were, in fact, spent on cardamom, fenugreek and spice mixtures, saffron and turmeric. Pepper tops the chart. While the year-to-year import value has risen for cinnamon, cloves and mace, the opposite is the case for capsicum, ginger and vanilla, cumin, nutmeg and coriander and curry.
