Sesame seeds: China boosts Brazilian exports

NEW DELHI/N'DJAMENA. Sesame seed farmers in Gujarat, India, have had little luck with the weather this season. Meanwhile, the harvest has begun in Chad, while Brazil is becoming one of the most important sesame seed exporters.

Slight price increase

The weather has not been kind to sesame seed farmers in the Indian state of Gujarat this year. During the flowering period, there was unusually heavy rainfall for this time of year. This led to increased pest infestation and mould growth on the plants, which not only affected quality but also reduced yields. Later on, the much-needed monsoon rains, which could have increased yields, were delayed.
