NEW DELHI/ISLAMABAD. Rainfall in India and Pakistan is causing concern among market players. Increased demand ahead of the holidays is likely to affect price developments. Chinese importers are increasingly turning to Brazil.

Price increase expected

Unfavourable weather conditions are dampening the mood in the Indian sesame seed market. Heavy rainfall has caused crop damage in the main growing regions, with some fields completely under water and noticeable yield losses. The prospect of a smaller crop is likely to push up prices, especially if domestic demand picks up noticeably ahead of the holiday season. However, prices are still much lower than at this time last year and had fallen again just a few weeks ago. Recently, however, a slight increase has been recorded.
