NEW DELHI. The summer harvest is slowly picking up in India. Sesame seed production estimates remain optimistic.

Prices remain firm

Arrivals are expected to increase over the next few days. Due to an increase in acreage and good weather conditions production is currently expected to range above 100,000 metric tonnes in Gujarat, which is more than double than last year. Supplies are high and demand is low, meaning that the market remains under pressure. Prices have, however, remained stable for the time being.

Lockdown in phase 4

On Sunday, the government announced that the lockdown to contain the spread of the coronavirus will be extended again until 31 May. Some industries, the food sector including, have resumed work some time ago with special permits. Due to a lack of personnel there may, however, be delays in shipments. Emergency regulations are in place in Europe to speed up the approval of sesame seed containers. The Veterinary and Food Inspection Office in Hamburg, for instance, accepts copies of health certificates and test reports. However, the original documents issued in India must be submitted as soon as possible.
