NEW DELHI/ADDIS ABABA. According to the latest data from the Indian Ministry of Agriculture, acreage has declined nationwide. The new crop is expected to be available on the commercial markets shortly.

Total acreage smaller than last year

Sesame seed farmers in India have now begun harvesting. The new crop is expected to be available on the markets from mid-October. According to data from the Indian Ministry of Agriculture, around 1.043 million hectares had been sown with sesame seeds nationwide by 19 September, which is slightly less than last year (1.096 million hectares). In Gujarat, one of the smaller growing states in the kharif season, the acreage this year is 41,004 hectares, compared to 49,426 hectares last year.
