Sesame seeds: hoped-for rainfall in Tanzania

NEW DELHI/DODOMA. With the coming summer crop, the Indian sesame seed market lacks any basis for rising prices. In Tanzania, farmers have completed sowing.

Indian market stagnates

A lack of demand for Indian sesame seeds beside the tenders is causing prices to stagnate. Market players reckon that this will not change in the next two to three months. Hulled sesame seeds, 99.98% purity, are currently trading at a level of USD 1,870/mt CIF Hamburg.

In the first two months of the new calendar year, India imported a total of 42,496 mt of sesame seeds, an increase of 5.3% compared to the 40,351 mt imported in the same period last year. At 31,722 mt, three quarters of the shipments came from Brazil, meaning that impor
