Sesame seeds: India's acreage expands noticeably

NEW DELHI/ISLAMABAD. Sesame farmers in India have gained a significant lead over the 2024 Kharif sowing season. Rainfall in Pakistan's growing regions could lead to better yields.

Sowing in India is progressing well

Sowing for the Kharif crop is still in full swing in India. According to the latest data from the Ministry of Agriculture Welfare, around 447,000 hectares had been sown with sesame seeds nationwide by 14 July 2025, compared with just 311,000 hectares at this time last year, a drop of more than a quarter. In Andhra Pradesh, one of the smaller producing states, 6,387 hectares of the planned 12,000 hectares have been sown so far, compared to only 3,480 hectares last year.
