Sesame seeds: lower Kharif crop expected in India

NEW DELHI/BRASÍLIA. In large parts of India’s sesame-growing regions, sowing for the Kharif crop is progressing more slowly than last year. In Sudan, the new crop is expected in November. Brazilian farmers are scaling back sesame cultivation.

Slow sowing in India

Sowing for this year’s Kharif season has been underway in India since early June. The harvest takes place in autumn and accounts for the bulk of annual sesame seed production. Initially, however, work in the fields progressed only slowly; according to market players, some growers are favouring peanuts and cotton over sesame seeds this year.
