Sesame seeds: Official crop figures are devastating

NEW DELHI. The Indian Oilseeds and Produce Export Promotion Council (IOPEPC) has recently published its production report for India.

 

57% drop in production

The IOPEPC currently estimates the kharif crop as low 177,936 mt for white sesame seeds. Last year’s production was much higher at 418,165 mt, meaning that production has now dropped by more than half.

Managing Director Suresh Ramrakhiani points out that heavy rains in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh caused crop losses and reduced average. In Madhya Pradesh, the yield is as low as 51 kg/ha, which is why the only amounted to 22,540 mt, despite acreage ranking at 439,900 ha. At 482 kg/ha, things looked better in Guj
