Sesame seeds: optimistic cultivation forecasts for 2026

NEW DELHI/BEIJING. Unfavourable weather conditions are delaying sowing for the Rabi harvest in India. Demand is currently relatively high in China, but buying interest is only leaving a small dent in the abundant stocks.

Rabi harvest expected to be delayed

Unfavourable weather conditions in recent days have meant that sesame sowing for the Rabi crop is progressing more slowly than expected. In parts of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu in particular, unseasonal rainfall combined with cloudy skies and cooler soil temperatures have caused delays in field work. In addition, the germination process of the seeds is not progressing properly. Market experts therefore assume that, under the current conditions, the harvest in early summer could be delayed by 15-20 days.
