NEW DELHI/BEIJING. Yield losses have caused prices on the Indian sesame seed market to rise despite the availability of the new crop. On the Chinese market, however, the lower quality of the domestic crop is causing the opposite trend.

New crop in India becomes more expensive

In India, the sesame seed harvest is progressing and deliveries to the trading markets in Gujarat, Rajasthan (4,000-5,000 bags/day) and Madhya Pradesh (6,000-7,000 bags/day) are increasing day by day. Rainfall had caused yield losses. Although prices remained relatively stable in recent weeks, a slight upward trend has been evident in the market since this week. Natural sesame seeds rose to USD 1,430/mt FOB India this week, while prices for hulled sesame seeds, 99.98% purity, are currently at USD 1,650/mt FOB.
