NEW DELHI. The market in India is closed due to Diwali. Some exporters have, however, raised their prices before the holiday.

Supplies cannot meet demand

The rabi crop was disappointing. Now it is reported that the kharif crop of 178,000 mt will barely suffice to cover the annual domestic consumption of 150,000 mt sesame. Not to mention the 300,000 mt required of exports.

The carry-over stocks, which have accumulated over the last few years and were held by many different traders help to stabilise prices over the last few months. Demand was also comparatively low. This year’s average prices for hulled sesame seeds have so far ranged at 1,800 USD/mt CFR Hamburg
