NEW DELHI. South Korea has issued a new sesame seed tender for next week. In view of the large supplies, the tender is a good opportunity for traders in India to reduce stocks.

Korea to buy 9,000 metric tonnes

The bidding session will be held on 10 June. Reports state that South Korea intends to buy a total of 9,000 metric tonnes, 4,500 metric tonnes in premium and 4,500 metric tonnes in standard quality. The delivery date for shipments from India and other Asian countries is 31 August and for shipments from Africa the date is 30 September.

Further price corrections

Hopes are high that exporters in India will be awarded with large volumes. The summer harvest is in full swing and will ensure a steady flow of arrivals in the weeks to come. Hulled sesame seeds are trading as low as USD 1.60 per kg CIF Hamburg, which is a price not seen since March 2018. Natural sesame seeds are also trading USD 0.07 per kg lower than last week at USD 1.33 per kg CIF Hamburg, which is the lowest since November 2017. By contrast, the prices for black sesame seeds have risen to USD 2.20 per kg CIF Hamburg. Due to the high availability and subdued export demand it is highly improbable that the market wil receive a notable boost, even if suppliers in India win most bids.
