Sesame seeds: season starts in Tanzania

NEW DELHI/DODOMA. The 2026/27 sesame seed season opened in Tanzania last week, and growers are optimistic about the price development. In India, the summer crop presents a mixed picture. China’s high stocks are dampening buying activity.

Mixed situation in India

The outlook for the summer crop in India’s main growing regions remains mixed. In Gujarat, a better crop than last year is expected, at around 168,000 mt, whilst production in Maharashtra is lower year-on-year at only around 19,500 mt. Madhya Pradesh and Telangana together contribute moderate volumes of 25,000-30,000 mt to total production.
